How to verify that you have the latest updates for Money 2005 installed (896925)

This article describes how to verify that you have the latest updates for Microsoft Money 2005 installed. If you do not have the latest updates installed, this article also explains how to install the latest updates.

Determine the version of Money 2005

To determine whether you have the latest updated version of Money 2005 installed on your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all the programs that are running.
  2. Start Microsoft Money.

    If you cannot start Money because you received an error message, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Search.
    2. Click All files and folders.
    3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Sample.mny.
    4. Click Search.
    5. After the file is found, double-click Sample.mny.
    Money should now start.
  3. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Money.
If the version for Money 2005 is 14.0.0.1105 or a later version, your copy of Money 2005 has the latest updates installed. If you have an earlier version of Money 2005 installed, you do not have the latest updates installed.

Update Money 2005

To install the latest updates for Money 2005, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all the programs that are running.
  2. Connect to the Internet.
  3. Start Money 2005, and then sign in to Microsoft .NET Passport.
  4. After Money is finished starting, you may be prompted to download the Money update. If you are, click Yes.
  5. If you are not prompted to download the Money updates, click Tools, point to Internet Updates, and then click Update Now.
  6. When you are prompted to install the updates, click Yes.
  7. After the updates are installed, quit Money 2005.
  8. Restart your computer.
  9. Start Money 2005.
  10. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Money.
  11. If the version for Money 2005 is not 14.0.0.1105 or a later version, click OK, and then repeat steps 3 through 10. Otherwise, your copy of Money now has the latest updates installed.
Note If you had to open the Sample.mny file in step 2 of the "Determine the version of Money 2005" section, you can now open your data file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Money 2005.
  2. Click File.

    At the bottom of the File menu, you should see a list of the most recently used files. The second file in the list should be your data file. Click this file.
  3. If you are prompted to, click Don't Backup.

Problems updating Money 2005

If the updates do not install after you follow the steps that are outlined in this article, there may be a third-party program that is running on your computer. The third-party program may be preventing Money from being able to download the updates. Typical software that prevents Microsoft Money's installation are firewalls and some antivirus programs. You will have to configure the firewall or the antivirus program to let Money access the Internet. For more information, see the documentation that came with the antivirus or firewall software. If you do not have any firewall or antivirus software installed on your computer, your installation of Money may be damaged. To resolve this problem, remove and then reinstall Money 2005.
