You cannot install an update on an SMS 2.0 client computer because you are continuously prompted to restart the computer (896681)

SYMPTOMS

You run the Patch Installation Agent (PatchInstall.exe) to install an update on a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 client computer. However, you cannot install the update because you are continuously prompted to restart the computer.

Note The Patch Installation Agent is included with the SMS Software Update Services Feature Pack.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

You must have SMS 2.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5) installed before you apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Installation instructions

To install this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Create a shared folder in a location that can be accessed by the SMS site servers.
  2. Copy the FeaturePack1.0MR3-KB896681-X86-ENU.exe hotfix file to the new shared folder.
  3. On each SMS primary and secondary site server in your environment, log on by using an account that has administrative credentials.
  4. Close the SMS Administrator Console if it is open.
  5. On each primary site server, connect to the shared folder that contains the hotfix, double-click the FeaturePack1.0MR3-KB896681-X86-ENU.exe hotfix file, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.
Note This hotfix removes tools and files that are related to the SMS 2.0 International Client Pack (ICP). If you want to install the hotfix file on an ICP SMS 2.0 site, you must re-install the SMS 2.0 ICP after you apply this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
