You receive an "Unsupported File Type" error message if you add content to burn on to a CD or DVD in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (896567)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to add video, music or picture content for burning on to a CD or DVD in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you receive the following error message:
Unsupported File Type

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the content that you want to put on a CD or DVD is located on a network share. Only content that is located on your local Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer can be used for creating a CD or DVD.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move your videos, music or pictures from the network share to one of the following folders on your local computer before you burn a CD or DVD:
  • My Pictures
  • My Music
  • My Videos
Note These folders are located in the My Documents folder and are automatically monitored by Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Additionally, you can create or use another folder that is available for selection in the Add Folders Wizard. For example, create a c:\Multimedia and Pictures folder. After you create a new folder, use the Add Folders Wizard to select the folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press the Windows Media Center Start button on the Media Center remote control.
  2. Press the MORE INFO button on the remote.

    Note The MORE INFO button is labeled as the DETAILS button on some remotes.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Add Music.
    • Add Pictures.
    • Add Videos.
  4. Select Add folders, and then select Next.
  5. Select the check box for the folder that you want to add, and then select Next.

    Note If the folder you want to add is a subfolder of one of the folders that is listed, select the + button to open each subfolder until you reach the folder that you want to add.
  6. Select Finish.
  7. Repeat these steps for the following media types that you want to add:
    • Music
    • Pictures
    • Videos

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
