FIX: A Host Integration Server 2000 system may log event 650 warning messages when multiple Host Integration Server clients try to connect to an SNA Server service by using Named Pipes (896413)

SYMPTOMS

A Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 system may log event 650 warning messages when multiple Host Integration Server clients try to connect to an SNA Server service (Snaservr.exe) at the same time. The Host Integration Server clients try to connect over Named Pipes. The event 650 warning messages may be similar to the following:Event ID: 650
Source: SNA Server
Description: Windows socket accept() or ConnectNmPipe() returned error rc = 996.

CAUSE

The Named Pipes transport DLL (Snalm.dll) does not correctly set the bWait parameter in the GetOverlappedResult WIN32 API call. A small timing window may prevent a Host Integration Server client from making a Named Pipe connection to a Host Integration Server system. This problem occurs if another Host Integration Server client connected over Named Pipes at the same time.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Host Integration Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem only occurs if Host Integration Server clients are configured to use Microsoft Networking (Named Pipes) as the client/server protocol to connect to Host Integration Server systems. Host Integration Server clients should be configured to use TCP/IP as the client/server protocol if TCP/IP is the available network protocol.

The Host Integration Server 2000 Administrator client and the Host Integration Server 2004 client try to use Microsoft Networking (Named Pipes) if the clients are configured to use TCP/IP and the TCP/IP sockets connection was not successful. If a Host Integration Server system is logging event 650 messages when the Host Integration Server clients are configured to use TCP/IP as the client/server protocol, the clients may not be able to connect by using TCP/IP sockets. This problem would cause the Host Integration Server 2000 Administrator client or the Host Integration Server 2004 client to use Named Pipes.
