Windows 2000 Server does not display mount points for dynamic volumes that are mounted to a folder (896260)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use a dynamic volume in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP 4)-based server. The dynamic volume spans over a storage area network (SAN). You mount the dynamic volume to a folder of another dynamic volume. In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:

After you restart the computer, the volume mount points are not displayed.
Windows Explorer displays the drive letters and folders that are assigned to the dynamic volume.
After you follow these steps, the Change Drive Letters and Paths windows may not display the information about the dynamic volume and the name of the folder on which the dynamic volume is mounted:
1. You click All Tasks on the Actions menu in the Disk Management utility.
2. You click Change Drive Letters and Paths.
You cannot use CommVault Galaxy Backup and Recovery software to back up the dynamic volumes that you created.
If you use the Mountvol command-line tool to list the dynamic volume mount points, you see output that is similar to the following output:
*** NO MOUNT POINTS ***
\\?\Volume{GUID of VOLUMEMOUNTPOINTNAME}\ file:///\\?\Volume%GUID of filename\>
