FIX: An E_POINTER value is returned when you call the Dispose method on an object that was derived from the ServicedComponent class in the .NET Framework 1.1 (896246)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario.
  • In the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1, you have an object that was derived from the ServicedComponent class.
  • You call the Dispose method on the object from an unmanaged client.
When you do this, the Dispose method returns E_POINTER (0x80004003). However, the object is not disposed.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, call the Dispose method through the IDisposable interface.
