Files that have ".corrupt" or ".recovering" extensions appear in the Recorded TV folder in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (896040)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

Files that have a ".corrupt" or a ".recovering" extension appear in the Recorded TV folder in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. These files are large, and you cannot use the Windows XP Media Center user interface to delete them. Additionally, you may receive the following error message when you try to play this file:
Cannot play video
The file type is not recognised and cannot be played. either the correct codex (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

CAUSE

If you start and stop the Windows XP Media Center services while recordings are in progress, files may be created that have a ".corrupt" or a ".recovering" extension in the Recorded TV folder. Media Center tries to recover any usable data and then uses that data to create a file that has a ".dvr-ms" extension. The files that have a ".corrupt" or a ".recovering" extension may still exist after the file that has a ".dvr-ms" extension is created.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must use Windows Explorer to manually delete these files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Select the Shared Documents folder.
  3. Select the Recorded TV folder.
  4. Select the files that have ".corrupt" or ".recovering" extensions.
  5. Press DELETE, and then confirm that you want to delete the files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
