INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services issue that is fixed in the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated March 4, 2005.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • After you modify the properties of the .mht file that contains Chinese characters, garbage characters are added to that .mht file

    Consider the following scenario. You upload a .mht file to a document library that is in your Windows SharePoint Services Web site. The .mht file contains Chinese characters and uses Base64 encoding. You connect to the document library, click the down arrow that is next to the .mht file, and then click Edit Properties. You modify the properties of the .mht file, and then click Save and Close.

    When you view the file in the document library, the .mht file contains garbage characters. Additionally, if you download the .mht file to your local hard disk drive, the .mht file contains garbage characters when you view the .mht file from your local hard disk drive. The garbage characters are added to end of the original text in the .mht file.

    This problem occurs because Windows SharePoint Services incorrectly processes .mht files that use Base64 encoding.
