SYMPTOMS

You cannot use remote registry editing tools such as Registry Editor to modify the 32-bit keys in the x64 versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this issue, use Remote Desktop Connection (Mstsc.exe) to locally log on from the client computer, as follows:
  1. On the client computer, click Start, click Run, type mstsc, and then click OK.
  2. Type the appropriate server name in the Computer text box. Click Connect.
  3. In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type the appropriate user name in the User Name text box. Type the appropriate password in the Password text box. Select an appropriate domain name in the Log on to list. Click OK.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

    You can use remote registry editing tools such as Registry Editor to modify the 32-bit keys.
