FIX: The Performance MMC snap-in stops responding when you try to add performance monitor counters to monitor a remote computer that is running Host Integration Server 2004 (894870)

SYMPTOMS

The Performance Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in stops responding when you try to add performance monitor counters to monitor a remote computer. This problem occurs if the remote computer is running Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004.

When this problem occurs, the Performance task appears as Not Responding in Task Manager.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Host Integration Server 2004 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Performance.
  3. In the left pane of the Performance window, click System Monitor.
  4. On the toolbar in the right pane, click Add to add the performance monitor counters.
  5. Click Select counters from computer.
  6. Type the name of the remote server that you want to monitor. For example, type \\HIS2004.
  7. Click the drop-down arrow under Performance object.
Notice that the Performance MMC snap-in stops responding.
