SYMPTOMS

After you remove Microsoft Digital Image from your computer, your computer does not detect the CD drive or DVD drive.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because some registry keys are modified in the registry when you remove Digital Image.

WORKAROUND

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the modified registry entries. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    5. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    6. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
    7. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    8. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    9. Quit Registry Editor.
    10. Restart your computer.

Note If you notice a loss of functionality in a particular program such as in CD recording software after you remove the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values, reinstall that software. If the problem occurs again, contact the software vendor for help.
  2. Remove the existing drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. If Control Panel is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System.
    3. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    4. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click Uninstall.
    5. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
    6. Restart your computer.
Note After your computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.
