The SMS hardware inventory process stops during the inventory of the Win32_Product WMI class in Systems Management Server 2003 (892928)

SYMPTOMS

During the inventory of the Win32_Product Window Management Instrumentation (WMI) class in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, the SMS hardware inventory process stops.

Additionally, an error that is similar to the following is logged in the InventoryAgent.log file:

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Win32_Product WMI class contains an empty or corrupted entry.

Note This problem also occurs if other WMI classes that are queried or collected contain an empty or corrupted entry during the SMS hardware inventory process.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Installation instructions

You must apply this hotfix at primary and secondary sites. Because of the new architecture in SMS 2003, you must create a new package and a new program to advertise this hotfix to the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers. After you apply this hotfix, the Setup program can automatically create the package and the program. We recommend that you use this new functionality to create the package and the program for the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers in your organization.

To install this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Download the hotfix file, and then run the self-extracting executable file to create the SMS2003-SP1-KB892928-X86-ENU.exe file.
  2. Copy the SMS2003-SP1-KB892928-X86-ENU.exe file to a folder on the SMS primary or secondary site server computer.
  3. Run the SMS2003-SP1-KB892928-X86-ENU.exe file on the SMS 2003 site server computer.
  4. After the files are copied, click Yes, I want to create a package and program now, and then click Next.
  5. Click Next to accept the default package name and the default program name. Then, click Next to accept the default package source location.
  6. Read and then select all the instructions on the current page. Copy the instructions, paste them into Notepad, and then save the instructions as a file that is named "Instructions.txt."
  7. Click Next to create the package and the program, and then click Finish.
  8. Open the Instructions.txt file. Follow the steps in the instructions to distribute to the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers the package that you created in step 7.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
