You receive an "Error: Access is denied" error message when you try to set the dirty bit on a mount point by using the fsutil utility in Windows Server 2003 (892512)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to set the dirty bit on a mount point by using the fsutil utility fsutil dirty set command in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you receive the following error message:
Error: Access is denied.

CAUSE

You experience this behavior because the fsutil utility cannot set the dirty bit on a mount point unless you specify the drive letter that is associated with the mount bit.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, temporarily assign a drive letter to the mount point. Then, run the fsutil utility on the drive letter instead of on the mount point path.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 will include a new feature that is named Maintenance mode. This mode will let you run a chkdsk command in a clustered environment. This may be sometimes more desirable than setting the dirty bit for the next failover.
