Additional network traffic may occur when you run the Security Update Inventory Tool or the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates in a Systems Management Server 2.0 environment (891778)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

You are using Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 to run the Security Update Inventory Tool or the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates. When you run these scan tools, additional network traffic may occur between the SMS 2.0 distribution point and computers that are running the following client software:
  • SMS 2.0 Client
  • SMS 2003 Legacy Client
  • SMS 2003 Advanced Client

CAUSE

Every time that you run these scan tools, the following files are copied from the SMS distribution point to a local directory on the client computer:
  • Msxml3.tmp
  • Msxml3a.tmp
  • Msxml3r.tmp
These .tmp files are required only if the XML component must be installed or upgraded on the SMS client computer. However, the scan tools copy these files to the SMS client computer even when the files are not required to perform the scans.

This process may create approximately 1.2 megabytes (MB) of additional network traffic every time that you run one of the scan tools.

MORE INFORMATION

How to install this hotfix

After you install this hotfix, the following files are copied from the SMS distribution point to the SMS 2.0 Client computer only if the XML component must be installed or upgraded:
  • Msxml3.tmp
  • Msxml3a.tmp
  • Msxml3r.tmp

Note There is currently no hotfix for this problem for SMS 2003 client computers.

To install the hotfix, run the applicable updated Setup programs, SecurityPatch_xxx.exe or OfficePatch_xxx.exe, on the computer that is acting as the SMS distribution point.

Note xxx is the three-digit language code.

These Setup programs detect and remove previous installations of the scan tools. However, you can permit the Setup programs to skip the removal of the collections, packages, programs, and advertisements that a previous installation of the scan tools created.

If you keep the existing SMS objects that you used during a previous deployment, the Setup programs reuse these objects. If a previous deployment used customized settings, review the settings for the collections, packages, programs, and advertisements to make sure that they are appropriate for your environment.

The settings that these Setup programs use are the default settings. However, the default settings may not be appropriate for all environments.

SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers

To work around this problem for SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers, use the /noxml command-line option with the Scanwrapper.exe tool instead of the scan tools that are described in the "Symptoms" section.

For additional information about how to use the /noxml option with the Scanwrapper.exe tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note The Scanwrapper.exe tool is used only for SMS 2003 Advanced Client computers. This tool replaces the S_scan.exe and O_scan.exe tools that are used for SMS 2.0 Client and SMS 2003 Legacy Client computers.
