You may receive an "Error! 26000" error message when you run the Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Setup program (891756)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Setup program, you may receive the following error message:
Error! 26000
After you click OK in the previous error message, you receive the following error message:
Setup failed to create symlinks.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the hosts file is missing from the %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc folder.

During installation, the Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Setup program tries to create a symbolic link from the Windows hosts file to the Interix hosts file. If the Windows hosts file is missing or has been renamed, you receive the error message and the Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 setup is not complete.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, create an empty, or zero-byte, hosts file in the %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc folder. To create an empty hosts file, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then open the following folder:

    %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc
  3. Create a file that is named hosts and that does not have a file name extension. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click an open space in the %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc folder, point to New, click Text Document, type hosts, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click Yes to confirm that the file name extension will not be txt.
  4. Run the Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Setup program.
