You receive many error alerts after you import the Exchange Server Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 (891602)

SUMMARY

You receive many error alerts in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Operator Console after you import the Microsoft Exchange Server Management Pack for MOM 2005.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you install MOM 2005 and Exchange Server on the same computer. You might install MOM 2005 and Exchange Server on the same computer if you use Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 or Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. When you install MOM 2005 and Exchange Server on the same computer, the MOM Server Action Account is created as a user account. However, Exchange Management Pack for MOM 2005 requires that the MOM Action Account be a Local System account. MOM 2005 does not let you choose whether to create the MOM Action Account as a Local System account or as a user account.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the MOM Action Account to run as a Local System account on the Management Server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, click Services, and then stop the MOM service.
  2. Double-click the MOM service, click the Log On tab, and then click to select Local System account. Click OK. Do not start the MOM service.
  3. Start the Component Services administrative tool, and then expand the Component Services\Computers\My Computer\COM+ Applications container.
  4. Right-click Microsoft Operations Manager Data Access Server, and then click Shut down.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  6. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mission Critical Software\OnePoint\Configurations\configuration_group_name

  7. Double-click the ActionIdentityMode entry, type 0 in the Value data text box, and then click OK.
  8. Start the MOM service.
These steps configure the MOM service and the MOM Action Account to run as a Local System account. With this configuration, you cannot use the Management Server Action Account to push install agents. You must supply user account credentials to push install agents.

If you are using MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition, you can no longer use the Install Agent Wizard. The Install Agent Wizard in MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition always uses the Management Server Action Account. To push agents by using other user accounts, you must follow the process that is outlined in the "Discovering Computers and Deploying MOM Agents" section of the MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition Readme file.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
