After you view and then close several events in Event Viewer, the tool may stop responding in Windows XP (891086)

SYMPTOMS

After you view and then close several events in Event Viewer on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, Event Viewer may stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The computer uses Intel hyper-threading technology.
  • The computer uses a non-US keyboard layout with the East Asian language support files and the right-to-left language support files installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Disable supplemental language support for the following:
    • Complex script and right-to-left languages
    • East Asian languages
    To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Languages tab, and then click to clear the Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai) check box and the Install files for East Asian languages check box.
    3. Click OK three times, and then restart your computer.

  • Use the US keyboard layout. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Languages tab, and then click Details.
    3. Click the Add tab, and then select the US Keyboard layout.
    4. Click OK three times, and then restart your computer.
  • Turn off support for Advanced Text Services. To do this, follow these steps.

    Warning When you turn off Advanced Text Services on a Tablet PC that is running Microsoft Windows XP, you are turning off a service that the Tablet PC Input Panel must use to provide handwriting recognition and speech recognition functionality. Additionally, you put your Tablet PC into an unintended state. We recommend that you use the following method only for testing purposes. Before you use it, use the other methods that are described in this article, and understand the potential compatibility effects it may have on other handwriting recognition, speech recognition, and East Asian keyboard input services. Cicero Unaware Application Support (CUAS) is a feature of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system that provides support for Advanced Text Services.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Languages tab, and then click Details.
    3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click to clear the Extend support of advanced text services to all programs check box.
    4. Click OK three times, and then restart your computer.
