The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you cannot establish an IrDA (Infrared Data Association) connection to another portable computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). You could establish a connection between the two computers before you installed Windows XP SP2 on your computer.

This problem does not occur when both computers have the same version of the Windows XP operating system installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when both computers have the IrDA connection speed set to 19.2 kilobytes per second (kbps) or slower.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must configure the IrDA settings for both computers to connect at 38.4 kbps or faster. For each computer, follow these steps:

Note The following steps are for a computer with an SMC IrCC-Fast Infrared Port device. Other infrared or IrDA devices will have similar settings. See the manufacturer documentation for your model of IrDA device.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Irprops.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Hardware tab.
  3. Click the Infrared Device listed in the Devices table.
  4. Click the Propertiesbutton.
  5. Click the Advanced, or Settings tab, or the equivalent tab, depending on your model of IrDA device.
  6. In the Property list, click the Maximum Connection Rate, or Speed Limit, or the equivalent list entry, depending on your model of IrDA device.
  7. In the Values list, click 38.4kbps, or 38,400 bps, or the equivalent setting, depending on your model of IrDA device. You can also click a higher setting.
  8. Click OK two times.
