INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Office Excel 2003 issue that is fixed in the Excel 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated November 18, 2004.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package also fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • You may experience one of the following symptoms when you open a Microsoft Excel workbook that contains many links to other files:
    • Excel may take a long time to update all the links in the workbook if you click Update when you open the workbook or if Excel automatically updates the links.
    • Excel may stop responding during the update if the workbook has more than 32,000 links.
    • If you click Do not update when you open the workbook, and then you click Update Values in the Links dialog box for all the links in the Sources list when the workbook is open, Excel may stop responding.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed or on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed.

    However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed than we have on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
