Clients that are discovered by the Active Directory System Discovery method are not assigned to the site in Systems Management Server 2003 (888935)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSAfter you run Active Directory System Discovery in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you may experience the following symptoms: CAUSEThis issue will occur when all the following conditions are true: - You have not defined the same subnets in the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC) as you have for the Active Directory System Discovery method.
- You have not added the Active Directory directory service site name to the SMS 2003 site boundaries.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, you must define the same subnets in the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in as you have for the properties of the Active Directory System Discovery method. Additionally, you must add the Active Directory site name to the site boundaries of your SMS 2003 site. To do this, follow these steps. Step 1: Define subnets in the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Sites and Services.
- Expand Sites, right-click Subnets, point to New, and then click Subnet.
- Enter the subnet address in the Address box, enter the subnet mask in the Mask box, select a site name in the Select a site object for this subnet box, and then click OK.
- Repeat steps 2 through 3 for each subnet that you have added to your SMS 2003 site boundaries.
Step 2: Add the Active Directory site name to your SMS 2003 site boundaries- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
- Expand Site Database (SiteCode - SiteName), and then expand Site Hierarchy.
- Right-click SiteCode-SiteName, and then click Properties.
- On the Site Boundaries tab, click the button that has a yellow star to add a new site boundary.
- Click Active Directory site, type the name of your Active Directory site in the Site Name box, and then click OK.
MORE INFORMATIONWhen Active Directory System Discovery finds a potential SMS client computer, it creates a data discovery record (DDR) for that client computer. When a site server receives a DDR, the Data Discovery Manager (DDM) reads the DDR. The DDM determines whether the client that was discovered should be assigned to the site based on the site boundaries that you have enabled for the SMS 2003 site. If a discovered client should be assigned to the site, a client configuration request (CCR) file is created to assign the discovered client to the site. If the discovered client does not match site boundaries, a CCR is not created, and the client is not assigned to the site.
