SYMPTOMS

You print a Microsoft Office Visio 2003 or Microsoft Visio 2002 drawing that contains vertical text to Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5.0. When you view the Portable Document Format (PDF) file, vertical text that is contained in the drawing is missing.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods, depending on your situation.

Method 1: Print the Visio drawing to a PostScript (.ps) file by using a Windows PostScript printer driver

Print your drawing to a PostScript (.ps) file by using a Windows PostScript printer driver. Then, use Acrobat Distiller 5.0 to open the file and to create the .pdf file. To use this method, you must have a PostScript printer driver installed on your computer. If no PostScript printer driver is available, install the Apple Laserwriter II NT printer driver.

To print the drawing to a PostScript (.ps) file by using a Windows PostScript printer driver, and to then use Acrobat Distiller 5.0 to open the file and to create the .pdf file, follow these steps:
  1. In Visio, open the drawing that you want to print.
  2. On the File menu, click Print.
  3. In the Name box, click the PostScript printer, click to select the Print to File check box, and then click OK.
  4. In the Print to File dialog box, specify a file name with a .ps file name extension, specify the location where you want to save the .ps file, and then click Save.
  5. Quit Visio.
  6. Start Windows Explorer.
  7. Locate and then double-click the .ps file that you saved in step 4.
Acrobat Distiller 5.0 starts. Then, Acrobat Distiller 5.0 creates a .pdf file in the folder where you saved the .ps file.

Method 2: Print the Visio drawing to Adobe Acrobat Distiller 6.0

Print your drawing to Acrobat Distiller 6.0. To print your drawing to Acrobat Distiller 6.0 on a computer that is running Adobe Acrobat 6.0 software, follow these steps:
  1. In Visio, open the drawing that you want to print.
  2. On the File menu, click Print.
  3. In the Name box, click Adobe PDF, click to select the Print to File check box, and then click OK.
  4. In the Print to File dialog box, specify a file name with a .ps file name extension, specify the location where you want to save the .ps file, and then click Save.
  5. Quit Visio.
  6. Start Windows Explorer.
  7. Locate and then double-click the .ps file that you saved in step 4.
Acrobat Distiller 6.0 starts. Then, Acrobat Distiller 6.0 creates a .pdf file in the folder where you saved the .ps file.
