CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Windows Small Business Server license store has been reset to the default value of five CALs.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, depending on your scenario.

Note Before you follow these steps, we strongly recommend that you resolve any other issues that may appear in the event log. The resolution may fail, or the problem may occur again, if there are other problems with the computer.

Method 1: Use the Restore License Wizard to restore your CALs from a valid license store

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain Admins security group, and you must have previously used the Backup License Wizard to back up the license store.
  1. Click Start, and then click Server Management to start the Server Management tool.
  2. Expand Standard Management, and then click Licensing. Details about the currently installed CALs appear in the details pane.
  3. Click Restore Licenses.
  4. Follow the instructions to specify the file name and the location of the backup file from which you want to restore the CALs.

Method 2: Use the Backup or Restore Wizard to restore your CALs from a system backup

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain Admins security group.
  1. Insert the correct tape into the tape drive, or connect the removable hard disk to the computer.
  2. Open the Backup or Restore Wizard. To do this, click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then click OK. If the Backup or Restore Wizard does not recognize the backup media, the Recognizable Media Found dialog box is displayed, and you must click Allow Backup Utility.
  3. On the Backup or Restore page, click Restore files and settings, and then click Next.
  4. On the What to Restore page, click to select the Windows folder in the Items to restore area, click to select any other files or folders that you want to restore, and then click Next.
  5. On the Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard page, review the settings, and then click Finish to complete the restore. If you want to change the restore settings, such as where the backup is restored to or if the existing files are replaced, complete steps 6 through 9.
  6. Click Advanced.
  7. On the Where to Restore page, specify another restore location, or choose to have your files restored to a single folder. Click Next.
  8. On the How to Restore page, choose to replace existing files if applicable, and then click Next.
  9. If you restored the original location on the Where to restore page, make sure the Restore junction points, but not the folders and file data they reference check box is selected on the Advanced Restore Options page. If you saved to a different location on the Where to restore page, make sure the Restore junction points, but not the folders and file data they reference check box is not selected.

Note Do not recover files through a Remote Desktop session.

Method 3: Use the Add License Wizard to re-issue CALs

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain Admins security group. Also, if you have made changes to the hardware configuration of your computer since you added the CALs, you may have to transfer CALs instead of re-issuing them.
  1. Click Start, and then click Server Management to start the Server Management tool.
  2. Expand Standard Management, and then click Licensing. Details about the currently installed CALs appear in the details pane.
  3. In the details pane, click Add Licenses to open the Add License Wizard, and then follow the wizard instructions.
  4. On the Contact Method page, select whether you will use the Internet or the telephone to re-issue licenses.

Note If you have an Internet connection, we recommend that you use the Internet to re-issue your CALs. If you are using the telephone, be prepared to provide a customer service representative with the Installation ID from the Confirmation Information page in the wizard. As soon as you have entered the Confirmation ID that is provided by the customer service representative, the wizard will provide the Installation ID for the next CAL that you want to re-issue.
  5. After you complete the wizard, update the Licensing console to verify the successful re-issue of the CALs.

    Notes
    • You will be required to provide the license codes that you received when you purchased the CALs.
    • We recommend that you use the Backup Licenses Wizard to back up your licenses so that you can restore them from back up whenever possible.
