The Configure E-Mail and Internet Connection Wizard may not run successfully, or you may receive a "0xc0000409" error message in Windows Small Business Server 2003 (888817)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Configure E-Mail and Internet Connection Wizard (sometimes known as CEICW) and then configure Internet Protocol (IP) restrictions on a virtual directory in Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:
  • The wizard does not run successfully, although you receive no error message.
  • The wizard stops responding (hangs).
  • You receive the following error message:
    0xc0000409: An exception has occurred.

Note By default, the Icwlog.txt file is written to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Support

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You create a virtual directory.
  • The virtual directory alias contains a comma.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Delete and then re-create the virtual directory, but do not include a comma in the new virtual directory alias. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
    2. Expand Advanced Management, expand Internet Information Services, expand your computer node, expand Web Sites, and then click Default Web Site.
    3. In the right pane, right-click the virtual directory alias that contains a comma, and then click Delete.
    4. When you are prompted to delete the item, click Yes.
    5. In the left pane, right-click Default Web Site, point to New, and then click Virtual Directory.
    6. In the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard, click Next, and then type the new virtual directory alias.

      Important Do not include a comma in the new virtual directory alias.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Type the path of the Web site directory, and then click Next.
    9. Set the access permissions for the virtual directory, click Next, and then click Finish.
  2. Reset Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). To do this, click Start, click Run, type iisreset in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Restart the Configure E-Mail and Internet Connection Wizard. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
    2. Expand Standard Management, click Internet and E-mail, and then click Connect to the Internet in the right pane.
