You may receive a "Some of the system components that are installed on your computer do not match the versions required for Visual Studio .NET" when you start to install Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Studio 2005 (888472)

SYMPTOMS

When you start to install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Studio 2005, a dialog box may appear next to Step 1 that contains the following message:

Visual Studio .NET
Visual Studio .NET PreRequisites - Setup has detected that some of the system components that are installed on your computer do not match the versions required for Visual Studio .NET. You must install a different version of these components.
Visual Studio 2005
Visual Studio 2005 PreRequisites - Setup has detected that some of the system components that are installed on your computer do not match the versions required for Visual Studio 2005. You must install a different version of these components.
Note In these messages, the word "Prerequisites" is capitalized incorrectly.

CAUSE

This dialog box is not really an error message, even though it appears to be one. This message means that you must first load components from the Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 Prerequisites CD before you can install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005.

RESOLUTION

To load the components, click the Step 1 image or the Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites text or the Visual Studio 2005 Prerequisites text that is next to the Step 1 image. You will be prompted to insert the Prerequisite CD.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

When you start the Prerequisite Setup program, you may receive the following message:Setup has detected that another program requires the computer to rebootYou may receive this message even after you restart the computer one or more time. To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Cancel the installation and insert the Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 Prerequisites CD.
  2. Click OK if you receive the following Autorun message:Please insert disc one of the product you want to install.
  3. Locate and then double-click the Setup.exe program that is in the root folder of the CD. You may receive the following message:Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 Prerequisites Warning - Setup on CD1 should be used to launch Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 Prerequisites setup so that only the necessary components are installed. Click Yes to exit and change CDs. Click No to install all available components.
  4. Click No. The Prerequisites Setup program continues.
  5. After the Prerequisite Setup program finishes, insert Visual Studio .NET 2003 CD1 in the CD drive, and then go to Step 2 of the Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Studio 2005 Setup program.
