Deploying an operating system by using the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack fails when Active Directory sites are used as site boundaries in SMS 2003 (888311)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you configure Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) to use an Active Directory site as a site boundary, the Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack Image Installation CD does not locate distribution points for the operating system package. Additionally, the Osdinstallwizard.log file contains the following error entry:
No distribution points were found for package package ID. Your site may be configured to use Active directory site boundaries. See KB 888311 for more information.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the OSD Image Installation CD cannot query Active Directory to obtain the Active Directory site name. The OSD Image Installation CD uses the Active Directory site name in a content location request to retrieve the local distribution point. The content location request cannot return a local distribution point without the Active Directory site name.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

You must include the IP subnets in the site boundaries list in addition to the Active Directory site name. To specify the IP subnets, follow these steps:
  1. Start the SMS Administrator console.
  2. Expand Site Database (your site code - name of your site)\Site Hierarchy.
  3. Right-click xxx - name of your site, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Site Boundaries tab, click the yellow create button to add the IP subnet that it is in the Active Directory site, and then click OK. Repeat this step until all IP subnets are added.
  5. Click OK to close the site properties.

Method 2

Configure the OSDADSITE variable to the Active Directory site name by using an unattended script with the Image Installation CD. For more information about how to create an unattended script, review the "Customizing the Feature Pack" section of the SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Users Guide.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, the Management Point detects the Active Directory site name based on the computer's IP address. The Management Point returns the Active Directory site name, and this completes the content location request to return a list of available distribution points.
