SYMPTOMS

You change the text size on a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a smaller or a larger text size. For example, on the View menu, point to Text Size, and then click Smallest. After you click a link on the Web page, or after you double-click the text on the Web page, the text on the Web page may unexpectedly change to normal size.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when both of the following conditions are true:
  • The Web page is encoded with the UTF-8 codepage.
  • You click a link on the Web page, and then when the File Download dialog box appears, you click Cancel.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Registry information

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Quit Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  4. After you select the subkey that is specified in step 3, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  5. Type FEATURE_PERSISTENT_USER_FONT_SIZE_KB887800, and then press ENTER.
  6. With the FEATURE_PERSISTENT_USER_FONT_SIZE_KB887800 subkey selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  7. Type Iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  8. Right-click Iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  10. Quit Registry Editor.
