Many false heartbeat alerts are generated by Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 servers (885724)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

SYMPTOMS

Many heartbeat alerts appear in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Operator console. The heartbeat alerts indicate that a particular computer is offline or unreachable. MOM administrators may also receive notification e-mail messages or pages when the alerts occur.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The MOM database is on a separate computer from the MOM server.
  • The time setting on the MOM server computer is not synchronized with the time setting on the MOM database computer.
  • The time setting difference is equal to the Interval to scan for agent heartbeats option on the Heartbeat Checking tab in Management Servers properties.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must synchronize the time setting on the MOM server with the domain time server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type Net Time /set, and then press Enter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
