"Access is denied" error message when you use the Shared Folders feature to share a folder that is located on a remote computer in Windows Server 2003 (884885)

SYMPTOMS

Assume the following scenario: You are a member of the Power Users group on a remote computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, or Microsoft Windows 2000. When you use the Shared Folders feature from the Computer Management tool on your Windows Server 2003-based computer to share a folder that is located on the remote computer, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The following error occurred while retrieving information on the path "Path": Access is denied.
You cannot share a folder that is located on a remote computer from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, even if you are a member of the Power Users group on that remote computer. You do not experience this issue if you use the Shared Folders feature on a Windows 2000-based computer to share a folder that is located on a remote computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
