FIX: You may not be able to compile a project that was created on a Windows 2000-based computer in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 if you compile the project on a Windows Server 2003-based computer (884048)

SYMPTOMS

When you work with a Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 project that was created on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may be not be able to compile the project on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the Visual Studio .NET 2003 project contains a primary interop assembly reference to Microsoft Visual Basic 6 assemblies. By default, a version of Visual Studio .NET 2003 that is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based computer does not contain a primary interop assembly for Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). However, by default, a version of Visual Studio .NET 2003 that is installed on a Windows 2000-based computer contains a primary interop assembly for MDAC.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
