You are prompted to restart your computer after you create multiple logical disk drives on an extended partition in Windows 2000 (883722)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you create multiple logical hard disk drives on an extended partition that is part of a basic disk drive on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the Computer Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in may stop responding for several minutes. Next, you may unexpectedly be prompted to restart your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you assign the drive letter and the format for the logical drive at the same time that you are creating another logical drive on the extended partition. The volume manager component is not synchronized with the mount manager component. Therefore, when the volume manager component queries the volume mount points, the volume manager component may not recognize the newly created logical drive. This behavior may cause Windows to prompt for a restart.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, create all your logical drives first. After you are finished creating all the logical drives that you want, configure drive letters and formatting settings. For example, you can create multiple logical drives in a single operation by following these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
  2. On the Computer Management list, click Disk Management.
  3. Right-click the free space on the extended partition where you want to create the logical drive, and then click Create Logical Drive.

    The Create Partition Wizard appears.
  4. Click Next, click the Logical drive option, and then click Next.
  5. Specify the partition size that you want, and then click Next.
  6. Click the Do not assign a drive letter or drive path option, and then click Next.
  7. Click the Do not format this partition option, click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Repeat steps 3 through 7 to create the logical drives that you want.
  9. After you have created all the logical drives that you want, right-click a logical drive that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Path.
  10. Click Add, click the logical drive path that you want, and then click OK.
  11. Repeat steps 9 through 10 for each logical drive that you want to assign a drive letter to.
  12. After you have assigned all the logical drive letters that you want, right-click a logical drive that you want to format, and then click Format.
  13. Select the logical drive formatting settings that you want, and then click OK.
  14. Repeat steps 12 through 13 for each logical drive that you want to format.
  15. Quit the Computer Management MMC snap-in.
