FIX: You may experience file corruption when you change a file in the Visual Studio .NET 2002 IDE (883518)

SYMPTOMS

When you use IBM Rational ClearCase dynamic views to change a file that is located on a remote server, you may experience file truncation and data corruption. When you try to open a saved file, you may receive an error message in the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET IDE that is similar to one of the following:

Error message 1
Access Denied
Error message 2
The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid. (Win32:ERROR_FILE_INVALID 1006, NTSTATUS:STATUS_FILE_INVALID 0xC0000098).

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you apply the hotfix, you may receive the following error message:
fatal error C1033: cannot open program database.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Open Clearcase Home Base.
  2. Click the Administration tab.
  3. Click Control Panel.
  4. On the MVFS tab, click to select Case Insensitive MVFS. Case preserving will also be selected as soon as you click to select Case Insensitive MVFS.

MORE INFORMATION

When you experience this problem, you can edit and then save the file with no problem. However, when you reopen the file, you may receive one of the error messages that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

You may also experience the following problems:
  • Additions to the file
  • Deleted data that is still present
  • Data that is missing from the end of the file
You do not experience this problem if you make a change to the file locally.
