You cannot start a shared session in OneNote 2003 (883287)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a shared session in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you cannot start the session.

To try to start a shared session in OneNote 2003, point to Shared Session on the Tools menu, and then click Start Shared Session.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when Port 2302 is not open on your router or firewall.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Open Port 2302 on your router or firewall

By default, OneNote 2003 uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) Port 2302.

To verify that Port 2302 is open, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

To verify that OneNote 2003 is configured to automatically select Port 2302, follow these steps:
  1. Start OneNote.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click Shared Session in the Category list.
  4. Click to select the Automatically select the port (recommended) check box.

If your router supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), click to select the Automatically configure routers that support Universal Plug and Play check box.
  5. Click OK.
If you determine that Port 2302 is open and you still cannot start a shared session in OneNote 2003, use the next method (Method 2) to manually configure the port in OneNote 2003.

If you are the network administrator, see the documentation that is provided with your networking software to determine the steps to open Port 2302. OneNote 2003 configures firewalls and routers that support UPnP automatically. Contact your hardware firewall manufacturer or router manufacturer for the latest firmware for your device to make sure that the firmware supports UPnP. Use the configuration tools that are provided by your firewall or router manufacturer to open the UDP Port 2302 on your device. You may also have to make sure that you have the UPnP feature enabled on your router.

Note If Port 2302 is not available, OneNote will select another port from the range 2302-2400. If opening Port 2302 does not work, you may have to enable the range 2302-2400.

Method 2: Manually configure OneNote 2003 to use an open port

Contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) to verify the port you want to use is open. Then do the following:
  1. Start OneNote 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click Shared Session in the Category list.
  4. Click Use the following port, and then type the port number you want to use in the Port text box.

Note If your router supports UPnP, click to select the Automatically configure routers that support Universal Plug and Play check box.
  5. Click OK.
