The Available Programs Manager runs a program that is no longer advertised to run on a Systems Management Server 2.0 client (883267)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 client computer, the Available Programs Manager (APM) runs a program that is no longer advertised to run.

A blank Advertised Program Countdown dialog box may also appear, although there are no packages that are available to run.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the APM incorrectly schedules a program to run even though that program is no longer advertised to the client.

The APM may incorrectly schedule a program to run when all the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented:
  1. The Allow users to run the program independently of assignments option is enabled for the mandatory advertisement schedule.
  2. The time that is scheduled for the mandatory advertisement is far enough in the future so that the APM does not run the program as soon as it receives the advertisement.
  3. A change occurs that causes the SMS 2.0 client to no longer be a member of the collection that is targeted by the advertisement, or you delete the advertisement.
  4. The APM process is shut down before it is notified that it should not run the advertised program.

Note The APM process is shut down when you shut down the SMS 2.0 client computer. The APM process is also shut down automatically every 23 hours, and it is then restarted by the SMS 2.0 Client service.
The SMS 2.0 client computer may then run the advertised, mandatory program the next time that the APM is started, even though this client is no longer among the targeted clients.

Note A blank Advertised Program Countdown dialog box may be displayed on the SMS 2.0 client computer if Provide a countdown is enabled on the Notification tab of the Advertised Programs Client Agent properties in the SMS Administrator console.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the program that is no longer advertised. To disable the program, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. In the console tree, expand Site Database (SiteCode - SiteName) where SiteCode - SiteName is the site that contains the program that you want to disable.
  3. Click Packages and then expand the package that contains the program that you want to disable.
  4. Click Programs. In the details pane, locate the program that you want to disable.
  5. Right-click the program that you want to disable, and then click Properties.
  6. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Disable this program on computers where it is advertised check box, and then click OK.
