A physical hard disk drive on your computer may appear as a removable drive when you run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (878475)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a USB flash card in your computer and then view the contents of My Computer, a physical hard disk drive in your computer may appear as a removable drive.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You installed Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP SP2, and the wizard copies files to the physical hard disk drive to help in the setup of a wireless network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type X:, where X is the letter of the physical hard disk drive that appears as a removable drive. Click OK.
  2. Right-click the Autorun.inf file, and then click Delete.
  3. Restart your computer.

The Wireless Network Setup Wizard may also copy the following items to the physical hard disk drive on your computer:
  • The SMRTNTKY folder
  • The SetupSNK.exe file


You can delete these items from your physical hard disk drive. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type X:, where X is the letter of the physical hard disk drive that appears as a removable drive. Click OK.
  2. Right-click the SMRTNTKY folder, and then click Delete.
  3. Right-click the SetupSNK.exe file, and then click Delete.
  4. Restart your computer.
