The Boot.ini file is not updated correctly when a new partition is inserted on a Windows XP-based computer (873445)

SYMPTOMS

You install Microsoft Windows XP on a logical partition that is equal to the ninth partition on your hard disk drive. You insert a new partition in front of the partition where you installed Windows XP. In this scenario, the Boot.ini file is not updated correctly to point to the partition where Windows XP is installed. For example, when you insert the new partition, Windows XP is installed on the tenth partition, but 10 is formatted as 1: in the Boot.ini file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because partition numbers greater than nine are not formatted correctly in the Boot.ini file.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
