SYMPTOMS
When the number of concurrent incoming Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) connections reaches 2,000 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running Microsoft Exchange, your Exchange users may not be able to connect to the computer. The users may receive the following error message:
Error on telnet port 25:
421-Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.6713 ready at Service not available, closing transmission channel
Connection to host lost.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
