You cannot connect to Internet-based Web sites after you use Ipconfig.exe to set a class ID on a Windows 2000-based DHCP client (872861)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP3
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4

SYMPTOMS

After you use the Ipconfig.exe utility to set and to enable a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Class ID on a DHCP client computer, you can no longer connect to Internet-based Web sites.. You were able to connect to the same Internet Web sites before you set the DHCP Class ID.

Note This issue occurs specifically in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the DHCP client does not obtain proxy information from DHCP option 252.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove the DHCP class ID. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Cmd.exe, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type Ipconfig /setclassid *, and then press ENTER.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Test your Internet connectivity again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
