You receive a "The server extensions were unable to access the file <filename>.tmp" error message when you open a Web page or an HTML page in FrontPage 2002 (871154)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Web page or an HTML page in FrontPage 2002, you receive the following error message:
"The Server Extensions were unable to access the file <filename>.tmp."
You receive this message after you upgrade Microsoft Office FrontPage 2002 with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the FrontPageTempDir folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate and then click the following folder:

    drive\documents and settings\login\local settings\temp\FrontPageTempDir


    In the folder, the drive is the drive letter on the hard disk where your files are located. The login is your account name.
  3. On the File menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
If you still receive the error message after you complete these steps, set the permission for the FrontPageTempDir folder to Full Control, and then delete the folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate and then click the following folder:

    drive\documents and settings\login\local settings\temp\FrontPageTempDir


    In the folder, the drive is the drive letter of the hard disk where your files are located and login is your account name.

  3. On the File menu, click Properties.
  4. In the FrontPageTempDir properties dialog box, click the Security tab.
  5. Click the logon name in the Name list. Then, in the Permissions list, select the Allow check box that is located next to Full Control.
  6. Click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send the folder to the Recycle Bin.
  8. If you receive the following error message when you try to delete the folder, restart your computer, and then repeat steps 1 through 7:
    Access is denied. The source file may be in use
If you still cannot delete the folder, change the FrontPageTempDir folder permissions to give all users full control. Then, repeat steps 1 through 7.
