You cannot connect to the Internet by using Virtual PC for Mac 6.0 or Virtual PC for Mac 6.1 after you install software to the guest operating system (871151)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install modem software or Internet access software to the guest operating system on a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1 or in Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0, you may not be able to connect to the Internet or to your local network from the guest operating system.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of potential problems with Shared Packet networking. Shared Packet networking is the default Virtual PC network connection. Virtual PC can use the following networking methods to connect to the Internet and your local network:
  • Virtual Switch
  • Shared Packet
  • Shared Sockets
  • Shared Open Transport
Note Use Virtual Switch when you require more robust networking or when you require the guest operating system to obtain an IP Address directly from a network Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. Use the Shared Sockets and Shared Open Transport methods to troubleshoot the Shared Networking connection if the default Shared Packet method is not functioning as expected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps.

Note If the virtual machine is running, shut down the virtual machine before you follow these steps.
  1. On the Window menu, click Virtual PC List, and then click Settings.
  2. Click Networking.
  3. If the Enable Networking check box is not selected, click to select the check box, and then click Shared Networking.
  4. Click Virtual PC, and then click Preferences.
  5. Click Scripting.
  6. If the Show Scripts Menu check box is not already selected, click to select the check box, and then click OK.
  7. Click Set Networking Type on the Scripts menu, and then click OK.
  8. Click Change, click Shared Sockets, click OK, and then click Done.
  9. Click Start Up to start the virtual machine, and then check to see if you can connect to the Internet.
  10. If you still cannot connect to the Internet, repeat steps 7 and 8, but click Shared Open Transport in step 8.
