To resolve this problem and stop the online defragmentation from automatically running after the Active Directory garbage collection process, you must install this hotfix on each domain controller where you want to change the behavior. Also, you must add the following key to the registry. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters
Right-click the Parameters subkey, point to New, and then click String Value.
Type DSA Heuristics, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DSA Heuristics, type 0000000001, and then click OK.

Note There are nine zeros and a one in this registry value.
Close Registry Editor.

You can also configure the online defragmentation to run for a certian number of seconds. To do this, follow these steps:

Copy the following Visual Basic script to a text editor, such as Notepad, and then save the file by using a .vbs file name extension:
```
Set objRootDSE = GetObject("LDAP://rootDSE ")

objRootDSE.Put "DoOnlineDefrag", 90 
objRootDSE.SetInfo 
```
Note This script will run online defragmentation for 90 seconds. You can adjust this value.
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, change to the folder that contains the .vbs file that you saved in step 1.
At the command prompt, type cscript filename.vbs, and then press ENTER. In this command, filename is the name of the file that you chose in step 1.
