You receive the "Could not open this feature Error -8796" error message after you import an Entourage 2001 for Mac identity to Entourage X for Mac (870967)

SYMPTOMS

If one of the following conditions is true after you start Microsoft Entourage X for Mac for the first time
  • You try to import Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac information by using the Entourage Setup Assistant.
  • You try to use any feature in Entourage X for Mac.
you may receive the following error message:
Could not open this feature Error -8796

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Main identity is damaged during the import of Entourage 2001 for Mac information. This problem can result if one or more of the following items from the Entourage 2001 for Mac identity is damaged or corrupted:
  • Calander
  • Tasks
  • Events
  • Schedules
  • Notes
  • Custom Views
  • Preferences
  • Rules

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must delete the Main identity folder from the Microsoft Office X identities folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Home on the Go menu, and then open the Documents folder.
  2. Open the Microsoft User Data folder.
  3. Open the Office X identities folder.
  4. Drag the Main identity folder to the Trashcan.
After you delete the Main identity folder, start Entourage X for Mac and then create a new identity. However, when prompted, click I want to start using Entourage without importing anything, and then continue configuring your Main identity.

To import the Entourage 2001 for Mac identity to Entourage X for Mac, follow these steps:
  1. Start Entourage X for Mac.
  2. Click Switch Identities on the Entourage menu.
  3. Click Switch.
  4. In the Select an Identity dialog box, click New.
  5. In the Identity Name box, type a name for your identity, and then click OK.

    This starts the Entourage Setup Assistant. Follow the on screen instructions to create a new identity.
  6. After you finish creating the new identity, click Import on the File menu.
  7. Click Import information from a program, click the right arrow.
  8. Click Microsoft Entourage 2001 and then click the right arrow.
  9. Click to clear all the check boxes, except for the following three check boxes:
    • Messages
    • Contacts
    • Accounts
    These three check boxes must remain selected.
  10. Click the right arrow. Entourage X for Mac will now search for the Entourage 2001 for Mac information.
  11. Click Choose to start the import, and then click Finish when the import is complete.
