Outlook 2002 takes longer than expected to start when you run Outlook 2002 for the first time (870932)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook 2002 for the first time after you start your computer, you may notice that Outlook 2002 takes longer than expected to start.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You configured the Antivirus program to scan all e-mail messages every time that you start Outlook 2002.
  • The Add-in Manager that you used to installed Outlook 2002 Add-in programs starts at the same time as Outlook 2002.
  • You have turned on (enabled) the Enable Instant Messaging in Outlook option in Outlook 2002.
  • You have a damaged data file in Outlook 2002.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to resolve this behavior depending on your situation:
  • If you have an Antivirus program that is configured to scan e-mail messages, configure the Antivirus program so that it does not scan e-mail messages before you start Outlook 2002.
  • If there are Add-in programs installed in Outlook 2002, remove the Add-in programs. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Outlook 2002.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    3. In the Options dialog box, click the Other tab.
    4. Click Advanced Options, and then click Add-In Manager.
    5. In the Add-In Manager dialog box, click to select an Add-in program, and then click to clear the check box for that Add-in program.
    6. Repeat step 5 for all other Add-in programs in the Add-In Manager dialog box that you wanted to remove.
    7. Click OK to close the Add-In Manager dialog box.
    8. Click OK to close the Advanced Options dialog box.
    9. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.


    You may also use the Microsoft Outlook /safe command line switch to start Outlook 2002 without any Add-in programs. To do this, click Start, click Run, type Outlook.exe /safe in the Open box, and then click OK.

  • If the Enable Instant Message in Outlook option is turned on in Outlook 2002, turn off (disable) this option. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. Click the Other tab.
    3. Click to clear the Enable Instant Messaging in Outlook check box.
    4. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
  • If you have a damaged data file, create a new data file and then copy all the data from the old data file to the new data file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Locate the default Outlook.pst data file.
    2. Rename the Outlook.pst file to Outlookold.pst.
    3. Start Outlook 2002.
    4. Click OK when you receive a message that states that the Outlook.pst file could not be found.
    5. In the Create/Open Personal Folders File dialog box, click Open to create a new Outlook.pst file.
    6. In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box, click OK.
    7. Click Yes when you are prompted to re-create all Outlook shortcuts.
    8. On the File menu, point to Open, and then click Outlook Data File.
    9. In the Open Outlook Data File dialog box, locate and then click the old .pst file, and then click OK.
    10. In the Folder List area, rename the old Personal Folders to differentiate it from the new Personal Folder.
    11. Import all the data from the folder of the old personal folders (.pst) file to the folder of the new .pst file.

      Note You may also manually copy all the data from the folder of the old .pst file to the folder of the new .pst file.
