You receive an error message when you start the SQLServerAgent service while POP3-configured Outlook 2000 is running or when you start POP3-configured Outlook 2000 while the SQLServerAgent service is running (870674)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)

SYMPTOMS

If you start Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3)-configured Microsoft Outlook 2000, while the Microsoft SQLServerAgent service is running, you may receive the following error message from the SQLServerAgent service:

Error 22022: SQLServerAgent Error: The SQLServerAgent mail session is not running; check the mail profile and/or the SQLServerAgent service startup account in the SQLServerAgent Properties dialog.
If you start the SQLServerAgent service while POP3-configured Microsoft Outlook 2000 is running, you may receive the following error message:

The file FilePathToOutlook is in use and could not be accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when either POP3-configured Outlook 2000 is opened or the SQLServerAgent service starts while an instance of the other program is running. POP3-configured Outlook 2000 and the SQLServerAgent service both use the same Outlook 2000 profile. Both programs cannot use the same profile at the same time.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Use Microsoft Exchange Server as your mail server.
  • Install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3).

You must install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 1a before you install Office 2000 SP3.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
