FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series randomly selects a record from the list of DNS entries (870651)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When a DNS server is configured to return multiple records in a fixed order to a host query, the Microsoft Windows Media player 9 Series randomly selects from the list of DNS entries the address that it tries to connect to.

Note A DNS server is configured to return multiple records in a fixed order when DNS round robin is not enabled.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next update that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this hotfix, Windows Media Player will connect to the addresses in the order that they are returned from the DNS server. If the entry that the player tries to connect to is not available, the player try to connect to the next address in the list of DNS entries.
