FIX: Subordinate NIS servers do not receive the most up-to-date maps (867876)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5

SYMPTOMS

Server for Network Information Service (NIS) may not propagate the most up-to-date map data to subordinate NIS servers. This problem typically occurs on fast, gigabit networks.

CAUSE

Periodically, Server for NIS sends the YPPUSH command to subordinate NIS servers. At the same time, Server for NIS begins rebuilding the map cache. When the YPPUSH notification is received, the subordinate servers initiate a YPXFR network call to receive the most up-to-date map data. Then, Server for NIS provides the most up-to-date map data from the map cache. On faster networks, the YPPUSH network call and the YPXFR network call can complete before the map cache files are rebuilt. Therefore, the subordinate servers do not receive the most up-to-date map data.

WORKAROUND

You can force the most up-to-date map data by doing a manual YPXFR network call from the subordinate servers.
