Performance may suffer when you run the Virtual PC 2004 Additions on a Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine in a Virtual Server 2005 environment (867589)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Additions on a Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine in a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 environment, you may experience various problems, including the following:
  • Performance degradation
  • Failure of some services to start
  • Failure of the virtual machine image

CAUSE

These problems occur because the Virtual PC 2004 Additions are not designed to run in a Virtual Server 2005 environment. The Virtual Server 2005 Additions are newer than the Virtual PC 2004 Additions. They are developed specifically for Virtual Server 2005.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the Virtual PC 2004 Additions from the Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine and then install the Virtual Server 2005 Additions. To remove the Virtual PC 2004 Additions from the Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Virtual Machine Additions, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Yes to remove the Additions.
  5. Click Yes to restart the virtual machine.
Note If the problems that you are experiencing prevent you from removing the Virtual PC 2004 Additions, restart your computer in Safe Mode and then repeat steps 2 through 5.

To install the Virtual Server 2005 Additions, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Virtual Server, and then click Virtual Server Administration Website.
  2. In the navigation pane, point to Configure under Virtual Machines, and then select the virtual machine that you want to modify.
  3. In the Status pane, point to the virtual machine name, and then click Turn On.
  4. After the virtual machine has started, point to the virtual machine name, and then click Remote Control.
  5. Log on to the virtual machine either as an administrator or member of the Administrators group.
  6. After you have logged on, press the host key to release the mouse pointer.
  7. Under Navigation, click Configure VirtualMachineName, where VirtualMachineName is the name of the virtual machine that you want to modify.
  8. Under Configuration, click Virtual Machine Additions, click the Install Virtual Machine Additions check box, and then click OK.
  9. Under Status, point to the virtual machine name, and then click Remote Control. Click in the Remote Control window to return to the guest operating system. After several seconds, the Virtual Machine Additions - Installation Wizard appears.
  10. Continue through the wizard. When the wizard is completed, you are prompted to restart the virtual machine to complete the installation.
Note By default, the ALT key to the right of the spacebar is the host key.
