System Information tool reports incorrect total physical memory on your virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005 (867584)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual Server 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft System Information tool (Msinfo32.exe) on a virtual machine, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 reports total physical memory incorrectly. The total physical memory is typically reported to be 64 megabytes (MB).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the System Information tool queries the motherboard of the virtual computer for physical memory. Therefore, Virtual Server 2005 always reports eight banks of memory with 8 MB each, for a total of 64 MB.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Windows Task Manager to view the total physical memory of the virtual machine. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the Status pane, click the virtual machine name, and then click Remote Control.
  2. Click Remote Control, and then click Special Keys.
  3. Click Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and then click Task Manager.
  4. Click the Performance tab to view memory information.
