SUMMARY

If you use the Paste Link command to link information from a Microsoft Excel document to a Microsoft Word document on the Windows platform, it is possible to maintain the link(s) after you transfer the documents to the Macintosh platform.

The applications on both platforms must support dynamic data exchange (DDE), and the Macintosh must be running System 7.0 for this procedure to work properly. It is not possible to maintain the link(s) with versions of Word for the Macintosh earlier than 5.0.

MORE INFORMATION

After you transfer both the Word for Windows and the Excel for Windows documents to the Macintosh platform, the original Paste Link connection will be broken. To reestablish the link between the two documents, follow these steps:

  1. Open Word for the Macintosh.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. Click to select the Word for Windows document, and then click Open.

NOTE: The original document may have been saved in either Word for Macintosh or Word for Windows format.
  4. Select the link (Excel data) that needs to be reconnected.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Link Options (Link in Word 6.0 or later).
  6. In the lower-right corner of the Link Options dialog box, click Edit Link (Change Source in Word 6.0 or later).
  7. The Excel document name should be displayed with the Windows path preceding it.

In Word 5.X, delete the Windows path entirely so that only the filename remains. For example, change "C:\Excel\<file name>.XLS" to "<file name>.XLS" (without the quotation marks).

In Word 6.X and later, navigate to the Excel spreadsheet. Click to select the spreadsheet and then click Open.
  8. Click OK to return to the document.
  9. Repeat steps 4-8 for all the linked data.
  10. Open Excel for the Macintosh.
  11. On the File menu, click Open.
  12. Select the Excel document that contains the data that is linked to the Word document.
  13. On the File menu, click Save.
The links from the Excel worksheet should now be linked properly to the Word document.
