This article was previously published under Q85016 SYMPTOMS
Text documents always open using certain fonts, regardless of the
definition of the Normal style.
In Word 5.x, all text documents open in the Geneva 12-point font.
In Word 6.x, all text documents open in the Times 12-point font.
In Word 98, all text documents open in the Courier New 10-point font.
CAUSE
This behavior is by design of Microsoft Word. Geneva and Times are
proportional fonts, which means each character may not have the same width.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, change the font to a fixed-width font.
To change the font for the entire document, follow these steps:
- On the Edit menu, click Select All.
- In the Font menu, click a fixed-width font (for example,
Courier or Courier New).
The document should now appear and print as expected.
