How to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) by using Systems Management Server (842844)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 SP4
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SUMMARY

You can use Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 or SMS 2003 to distribute Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) from a shared distribution folder on a network.

Important To distribute Windows XP SP2 by using SMS 2.0, you must have SMS 2.0 with Service Pack 4 (SP4) installed.

If you are installing SP2 from the CD, the service pack installer file is named Xpsp2.exe. If you are downloading SP2 from the Microsoft Web site, the installer file is named WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-xxx.exe (where xxx stands for a specific language code, such as ENU for English). Both installer files are the same; they just have different names.

If you are downloading SP2 from the Web, for the purposes of this document, use WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-xxx.exe wherever you see Xpsp2.exe. To download SP2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
